Pick Pitching 2007

Can Pick's really FLY???
Can Pick's really FLY???

Here’s your chance to impress your friends with your mechanical ability...
Join us at The Gathering 2007 at Kentucky Lake for the Pick Pitching competition. You can design, build and compete with your Pick Pitching launcher at the beach.  The goal is pure distance. Longest throw wins. The rules are simple:

bulletBuild a portable Pick launcher, which will fit into a 12’x 6’ area and can be towed by a Vulcan 750.
bullet

All types of mechanical launchers are acceptable. Combustible gas, gasoline, compressed air, kerosene or the like are prohibited.  Loose Cannon's chili and/or it's after-effects (see picture below) are also not allowed to be used as fuel.  The lake is only so big and boat rental is expensive, so retrieval is a concern.

This is not Allowed!!!

After this picture was taken during Ky Lake 2004, it took us four hours to find our Pick.  Seems he landed in a Hillbilly Hollow across the lake and was being held captive for the hootenanny that night. If it wasn't for Jax and his way with the Southern Language, we might not have rescued Pick for the next round of Pick Pitching...

bulletThe base of the launcher must be secured during launching. (ie: wheel stops)
bulletNo one under the age of 18 is allowed to participate.
bulletHelmets and goggles for every launch are mandatory.  Sorry ABATE members...
bulletMake it portable, you must be able to parade it around town for the Friday night Banquet.
bulletSupervised practice times will be available throughout the weekend.  Roadrash and Schmoof will make themselves available for these sessions by appointment.
bulletAll launchers must be approved by August 15th, 2007.
bulletThe longest toss of 3 - 200 to 240 lb (depending on winter weight gain) Pick's wins. Pick will be supplied.  Duct taped Pick's are legal, just not encouraged.
bulletAccuracy is not judged, but you must keep your Pick in the designated area.
bulletThe distance will be judged by where the Pick first lands.  Skips and escape attempts will not count.  Longest scream will be judged in a separate contest.
bulletThe competition will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm at the beach.
bulletDesign ideas can be obtained from FCC West or from the exceptional members of the VN750 YahooGroup or http://www.vn750.com.
bulletRegistration is due by August 15, 2007. A registration fee of $25 includes parade entry fee, certificate of participation and two coveted Pick Pitching tee shirts. Winner will take home the Annual Pick Pitching trophy and Pick's bike plus a years supply of Diet Dr Pepper (provided by Pick of course).

This year's entrys

Even the Cub Scouts got into the fray...  My son's Cub Pack made Pick-a-pults during their craft day.

Our test Pick ready for launch...

The Cub Scouts should be able to build the full size model within the timeframe to use at the Gathering.  Never underestimate a group of bored boys on summer break...

(not too sure if this is a legal design)

The Pick Pepper Cannon

This design by Knifemaker incorporates Pick's favorite beverage as a propellant. Not sure how legal it will be, but the only thing that would make this more lethal would be the addition of Menthos candy (as proven by Mythbusters).

Lzzrrd's Proposed Pick Kicker???

Not too sure on how far this machine might propel our Pick, but Lzzrrd emailed this statement;

"As yet untested. I'd like to test it. :-) "
